Warm Hummus: Can Hummus be Served Warm?

Warm hummus: It may sound unusual, but in countries where hummus originated (although we don’t know exactly where this was), hummus is traditionally served – you guessed it – warm. Here in the US, hummus is usually chilled and served as a dip with veggies, bread, crackers, and more. No matter how you prefer to eat your hummus, here’s a look at the debate about the temperature of hummus and a few of our favorite ways to enjoy it!

Can Hummus Be Served Warm?

The debate about the preferred temperature of hummus is *ahem* a hot one (see what we did there?).

In Middle Eastern countries, hummus is served warm, with warm-from-the-oven pita bread. All we can say is yum. So, to put it simply – yes, warm hummus is absolutely acceptable. Not only acceptable, but recommended, depending on where in the world you live (in Turkey, hummus is traditionally served warm). Of course, many prefer to enjoy hummus cold – especially when you’re dipping fresh cut veggies. No matter if you like warm hummus or cold hummus, or anything in-between, we have recipes and ways to serve our favorite dip.

Recipes that Use Warm Hummus

We have many great recipes that use warm hummus. Here are a few of our favorites!

Is It OK to Warm Up Hummus?

Of course, the most traditional way to eat hummus is to dip it. Here are a few of our favorite ways to enjoy:

Sous vide the Package:

If you haven’t opened your tub of Hope hummus, you can warm it up sous vide.

Spoon your hummus into a glass container, and microwave it at medium heat in 30-second intervals, stirring in between.

Stove Top:

This may be tricky, and is recommended, however it can be done over low – medium heat with constant stirring.

Over Double Boiler:

A much better option would put the hummus in a double boiler, and stir frequently.

These are some great ways to warm up our hummus if you want to serve it traditionally – with warm pita bread. There really isn’t a bad way to enjoy hummus, however. We’ve compiled a comprehensive list of what to eat with hummus, as well as what to dip in hummus

Should Hummus Be Warm or Cold?

Should hummus be warm or cold? The debate rages on, but we think it’s up to personal preference. It really depends on your mood and what you want to serve it with. There are so many things to dip into chilled hummus, you can cook with it, or you can enjoy traditional warm hummus. What’s your favorite way to enjoy it?
