Protein is an essential part of our diet. In fact, our muscles, hormones, antibodies, and enzymes, are all made of protein. Finding healthy sources of it is important if we want to be healthy and strong. One of the most common questions we hear is, “is hummus high in protein?” Thankfully, our favorite dip is a great source, thanks to its main ingredient: Chickpeas. Today, we’re going to discuss the power ingredient in humius, and why it’s a great choice to fuel your life.
Is Hummus a Good Source of Protein? Why We Need It
We need protein to function. They are the building blocks of our bodies, and are necessary for the repair and rebuilding of new cells. It is especially important after a workout, or if you are pregnant or nursing. It helps our blood clot, keeps our vision strong, balances our fluids, aids in the transporting of fluids through our bodies, gives us energy after we’ve burned through other resources, and much more.
Chickpeas: A Powerful Bean
Chickpeas are part of the legume family, along with beans, peas, and many other great vegetables. Much like other beans, chickpeas are a great source of protein. Each cup of garbanzo beans contains 12 grams – that’s 24% of the daily value your body needs (based on a 2,000 calorie diet). While meats contains more, they aren’t as good for your heart. Meats can be high in saturated fats, which are bad for your cholesterol and can increase your risk of heart disease. Chickpeas are a great alternative, because they have a lot of protein, and are cholesterol free, and contain less than 1 gram of saturated fat per serving (source).
Protein in Hummus from Chickpeas
Is hummus high in protein? Does hummus have protein? Well, when you consider that the main ingredient is chickpeas, the answer is yes. So, while you’re not going to be eating a cup of our tasty dip (though we understand – sometimes you really want to), even a serving size has a good amount in it, which makes it the perfect snack. If you’re trying to lose or regulate your weight, or simply looking for something to fill you up during those long afternoons at work, then the protein in hummus will keep you full and give you energy.
Hummus Protein Per Serving
Is humus protein? Well, hummus protein varies from flavor to flavor, and brand to brand. In 2 tablespoons (the suggested serving size) of our Original flavor there is 1 gram of protein, while our Red Pepper flavor has 2 grams per serving. A 1/3 of a cup gives you 4 grams. The best part about hummus protein is that it provides your body with all nine essential amino acids that are able to produce complete protein – this makes it a much better choice than other sources. You can up the amount you get when you eat humus by pairing it with food that is also high in protein, such as:
- Broccoli
- Sugar Snap Peas
- Cauliflower
- Whole wheat bread with a lot of grains and nuts
- Use it as a spread instead of mayo on your sandwiches
- Put it on a burger, or serve along with the meat in your meal
Instead of reaching for a salty snack, which won’t give your body the energy it needs, grab a snack where you get high protein hummus with a healthy vegetable.
