We strive to make food that nourishes from the inside out. Every ingredient is considered for its flavor and nutrition. If it isn’t nutritive or delicious, it doesn’t make it into our hummus.
That’s why we use organic chickpeas: High levels of the weedkiller glyphosate have been found in conventional chickpeas.
All our hummus is certified organic, which means that every ingredient we use in our products is grown without the use of pesticides. Today we’ll dig into glyphosate in hummus, and why it’s important to choose organic chickpeas when you are considering which hummus to put on your table!
Do Chickpeas Have a Lot of Pesticides? Does Hummus Have Toxic Glyphosate? Is Hummus High in Glyphosate? Are Chickpeas Sprayed with Glyphosate? Do Organic Chickpeas Have Glyphosate?
There are a lot of questions about glyphosate in hummus. Today, we’ll try to answer them all so you get the answers you’re looking for!
What is Glyphosate?
There is much debate about whether or not glyphosate is even dangerous to our health. But, in 2015 the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that it is “probably carcinogenic to humans” based on animal, observational, and test-tube studies. “Probably carcinogenic” seems worrisome to us. Cancer-causing ingredients don’t have a place in our food. Unfortunately, conventional hummus brands have a surprising amount of glyphosate in them!
Glyphosate in Hummus?
The Environmental Working Group released a study of conventional hummus brands. They found that more than 90% of them had detectable levels of glyphosate. Additionally, over one-third of the samples tested exceeded their benchmark of what is considered safe for daily consumption (one sample had 15 times the amount of glyphosate!).
How Weedkiller is Used
Chickpeas are usually sprayed with glyphosate, not necessarily to kill weeds, but to dry out crops to make them easier to harvest. And, if the crop is too wet when the herbicide is applied, they can soak it up and leave a residue on the garbanzo beans themselves. Garbanzo beans/chickpeas are one of the main ingredients in hummus, which is why choosing organic is important.
Do Chickpeas Need to be Organic?
We don’t know about you, but any amount of cancer-causing chemicals in our food is worrisome. So, to answer your question: “Do chickpeas need to be organic?” Yes – when it comes to hummus, where the main ingredient is garbanzo beans – it is important to choose organic.
Organic Garbanzo Beans: The Foundation of Our Wholesome Hummus
We work directly with the farmers who grow our chickpeas to ensure that safe and sustainable growing practices are used. This means our hummus is full of nourishing goodness, and not full of harmful pesticides. Let’s look at the ingredients in our hummus to learn more about why we add each ingredient, and how it benefits the flavor and nutrition!
Avocado Lime Hummus
This is our newest flavor of hummus, and let’s just say it’s one of the most delicious things you ever could choose to eat. Here is a breakdown of the ingredients:
Organic Chickpeas/Organic Garbanzo Beans
Organic chickpeas are the foundation of our hummus. We don’t just care about flavor – we care about your long-term health. We don’t want glyphosate in hummus, which is why we choose organic.
Water
This one’s pretty self-explanatory. We use water to get our hummus to the creamiest, yummiest consistency for dipping!
Avocado Puree
Our puree is made from Hass avocados and lime juice concentrate. Avocados have a great flavor and are a wonderful source of healthy fat. And what goes better with avocado than lime? Yum.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
We’ve done a deep dive into the health benefits of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), as well as why it’s important to choose a high-quality, organic oil. We choose both to ensure our hummus has a rich, nutty flavor, and provides the greatest health benefits.
Tahini
We’ve also dug into the health benefits of tahini on our blog. Long story short, it’s full of protein, unsaturated fats, and fiber!
Sea Salt
Salt is essential for bringing out flavor, but it’s also extremely beneficial for our health. It boosts our hydration, balances electrolytes, improves digestion, regulates blood pressure, and more.
Green Jalapenos
These flavorful peppers have more flavor than heat, and they’re also a great source of vitamins A, C, and potassium. Who knew something so flavorful could also be good for you?
Cilantro
Cilantro is a controversial herb. You either love it or hate it. But, whatever camp you fall in, we can all agree that it’s great for your health. It helps rid your body of heavy metals, protects against colon cancer, settles your digestive tract, and more.
Cane Sugar
Sugar gets a bad rap, but in the right quantity, it provides a wonderful boost of energy. This is because our body’s main source of energy is glucose – this comes from the breakdown of sugars. We add a small amount of sugar to bring out the flavor of our hummus – making it more delicious however you use it!
Lime Juice Concentrate
Lime is famous for bringing out the flavor of avocado and adding a zing of flavor, but it’s also a fantastic source of vitamin C!
Spices
We add onion powder, garlic powder, and cumin to this particular flavor of hummus. These spices mix perfectly to give you the most flavor!
Citric Acid
We add citric acid to inhibit bacteral growth by lowering food PH. It’s a naturally occurring substance, and a great way to keep our hummus fresh longer. Many companies use preservatives with possible adverse health effects, but we opt for citric acid to keep our hummus as pure as possible.
That’s All, Folks! Organic Chickpeas, Spices, Olive Oil, and More
That’s it: Those are all the ingredients in our newest flavor of hummus. We strive to use all organic ingredients for better flavor and better nutrition. No one wants to worry about glyphosate in hummus – you want to be able to enjoy a delicious snack or create a nourishing, yummy meal without considering your cancer risk. Choosing organic means you choose organic chickpeas, spices, sugar, and extra virgin olive oil.
